Habit streaks that forgive a missed day

By , founder of CoachhUpdated

Coachh's streak counts the days you show up: a check-in, a weigh-in, a workout, or simply holding "show up" on a day with nothing else. Every 7 days in a row earns a streak save, you can bank two, and a missed day is covered by one. A streak broken yesterday can be repaired today, and each area, from food to training, keeps its own streak.

How it works, step by step

  1. Step 1: Show up, in any way that counts

Six daily habits sit at the top of the chat: show up, weigh in, water, a meal, a move and a lesson. A check-in, a weigh-in or a workout keeps your streak. On a day with nothing else, hold "show up" and that counts too, once a day.

Coachh after holding Show up: "Day 19. You showed up." with +5 XP, and the day streak at the top now at 19
  2. Step 2: Earn streak saves

Every 7 days in a row earns a streak save, and you can hold two. Miss a day and a banked save covers it, so the streak carries on. Today not being done yet never breaks it.

Your streak in Coachh: an 18-day streak, one of two streak saves banked, a 12-week calendar with a day covered by a save, and streaks by area for food, training, recovery, steps, body and learning
  3. Step 3: Repair a slip

Broke it yesterday with no save left? A check-in and one more thing today repairs it. After two missed sessions in a row, one friendly check-in comes on your next training day, never counting what you missed, with the 15-minute version ready.

  4. Step 4: See a streak for each area

Food, training, recovery, steps, body and learning each keep their own streak, some counted in days and some in weeks. Your strongest is called out, and your weakest becomes the next win to go for.

  5. Step 5: Collect badges and a weekly challenge

Badges come in bronze, silver and gold, each telling you how far the next tier is, and once earned they're never taken back. The weekly challenge is sized from your usual week, never more than two over it, and Monday's wins card sums up the week just ended.

Why do forgiving streaks work better than strict ones?

Because one missed day isn't what breaks a habit; giving up after it is. In a well-known study in the European Journal of Social Psychology, 96 volunteers repeated a daily eating, drinking or activity habit for 12 weeks, and missing one opportunity did not materially affect how the habit formed. The time it took to become automatic ranged from 18 to 254 days, so expect a couple of months, not 21 days.

A strict streak turns a single miss into a reset to zero, which is when many people quit. Coachh's streak is built for the opposite: saves cover a missed day, a broken streak can be repaired the next day, a 15-minute workout counts as showing up, and your level never drops. More on building the habit in how to stay consistent with working out.

What counts as showing up?

Any one of these keeps the day streak:

You do It counts
A morning check-in ("slept fine, legs are sore") Yes
A weigh-in Yes
A workout, including the 15-minute version Yes
A walk recorded in Apple's Workout app Yes, once
Holding "show up" on a day with nothing else Yes, once a day

The other daily habits, such as meals and water, count toward today's six and toward their own area's streak. Rest days in your plan stay rest days: show up in a small way, or let a save cover the day.

How is Coachh different from a habit tracker like Streaks?

A habit tracker tracks any habit you add. The Streaks app by Crunchy Bagel, for example, is a habit list for Apple devices where a missed scheduled day resets a task to zero, though flexible schedules soften that. It's excellent if you want to track reading, flossing and everything else in one place: see Streaks app alternatives for it and other options, including free ones on Android.

Coachh only tracks health habits, and its streaks are tied to a plan. Your training streak follows the sessions Coachh wrote for you, your food streak follows the meals you log, and the coach knows about all of them when it answers. If you only want a checklist, a habit app is simpler and cheaper.

Where can you see your streak?

  • In the chat: ask "what's my streak?" and you get your streak card, answered on the phone.
  • On your Home Screen and Lock Screen: the habits widget shows the streak and today's six habits.
  • On Apple Watch: the first screen shows your streak ring and today's session.
  • In your inbox, if you turn on coaching emails: they count a repaired day just like the app does.

Badges you earn from training, such as fifty workouts logged or a new lift record, can be shared as an image with an invite link. The image shows the badge and the link, never your weight or anything about your body.

What it’s good at

  • Keeping a streak alive through a bad week, with saves and next-day repairs.
  • Counting small wins: a 15-minute session or a single check-in is showing up.
  • Separate streaks for food, training, recovery, steps, body and learning, so one slip doesn't erase the rest.
  • Tying streaks to a real plan, not a list of boxes.

Honest limits

  • It's built for health habits, not every habit in your life: you can't track reading or flossing.
  • You can bank at most two streak saves.
  • There are no shared streaks, friends' leaderboards or groups.
  • There's no free tier: streaks come with Coachh Pro.

What does it cost?

Everything on this page comes with Coachh Pro, one subscription with everything in it: $119.99 a year or $19.99 a month (US prices). The yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial; the monthly plan has no trial, and there’s no free tier. The full details, including how to cancel, are on the pricing page.

Common questions

What's the best habit tracker for fitness?

If you want any habit in one list, a general tracker such as Streaks or Habitify. If you want streaks tied to your training, food and recovery, with saves for missed days, Coachh is built for that. Pick by whether you want a checklist or a coach.

What is a streak save?

A save covers one missed day so your streak carries on. In Coachh, every 7 days in a row earns one, and you can hold two at a time.

Does a rest day break my streak?

Not if you show up in a small way, such as a check-in, a weigh-in or holding "show up", or a banked save covers it. Rest days in your plan stay rest days.

Can I fix a streak I broke yesterday?

Yes. A streak broken yesterday can be repaired today with a check-in and one more thing.

Can I see my streak on Apple Watch or my Home Screen?

Yes. The Apple Watch app shows your streak on its first screen, and the habits widget shows the streak and today's six habits on your Home Screen or Lock Screen.
